Nehru Welcomes Chou’s Message
(Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW DELHI, October 8. The Indian Prime Minister (Mr Nehru) today welcomed the “friendly message” he had received from the Chinese Prime Minister (Mr Chou En-lai), but said any advance by the Chinese from existing border positions would be “fully resisted.” He told a press conference, however, that military action to recover Indian territory in Chinese hands could be ruled out “at this stage.”
Referring to Mr Chou's statement that present “difficulties” between India and China were “merely an episode in an age-old friendship,” Mr Nehru said. “But how far it represents any basic change in the situation I cannot say. I hope it does.”
