Sugar
Sir.—Are the sugar manufacturers going to make the public pay compensation to the cane growers, who were compelled to plough in £6 million pounds worth of cane, by putting up the price of sugar and syrup to the public of New Zealand? It looks like it.—Yours, etc., DISGUSTED
Rangiora, September 25. 1959. [The manager of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Ltd. •Mr B. H. Ames), said that the recent slight increase in the price of refined sugar and syrups was due to an increase in the world price of raw sugar. Costs of compensation mentioned by the correspondent would not account for' the rise in the world price. The recent increase was the first for two years and followed seven successive price reductions when the world market price was falling.]
