RANDOM REMINDER
A FEW OF THE FIRST
It can not be claimed that items of New Zealand news are very often of keen interest to Americans. If a candidate at next year’s election should hint that Nev/ Zealand has territorial ambitions in the Philippines, the good citizens of Boston, Mass., are unlikely to crowd the streets demanding extra editions of their newspapers. But if there are any further claims such as the recent one that a South Canterbury man flew some months before the Wright brothers made the grade, there is bound to be muttering in Michigan, unrest in Oregon,
demonstrations in Detroit. It would be a pity, in a way, if New Zealand and the United States were to argue about the distinction of the first flight, for the wrangle could go on for a long time. And when it was finally settled to the dissatisfaction of one party or other, up would come the Russians with irrefutable evidence that one Serge Suhuh broke the sound barrier in a jet in 1832. It will all be thoroughly authenticated. It will be recalled that this honest son of the soil was married, amid scenes of wild rejoicing, in St. Petersburg, to that start-
ling Caucasian beauty. Tsar Tsar Labor, and that in appreciation of his technical skill, bravery, industry and patriotism, he was awarded, post' humously, a bust of Stalin and a season ticket on th# Moscow underground. So the history books have to be re-written from time to time; but the break of day need never mean the final nuclear explosion. L still brings “The Press and its classified advertisements, with their splendid opportunities for advancement, improvement in living standards, and a better bank balance.
