WHITEBAIT ON WEST COAST
Good Runs Reported In Most Rivers
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, Oct. 8. Greymouth whitebait fishermen had their first real meal of whitebait yesterday, catches of from five to 10 pints being netted by most fishermen along the Grey river. The major portion of these catches were used for home consumption. South of Greymouth, however, bigger catches have been reported. On Wednesday evening, a total of 2 tons 2cwt was railed to Christchurch from South Westland sources, and some large catches were netted at Paringa, as well as at Harihari and Hokitika.
The best run of the season occurred in the Hokitika river on Tuesday when catches of up to 301 b were reported. Fishing in the Mahinapua creek was said to be the best for some years, and there were catches there of as much as 401 b, while fishermen on the bank at the old aerodrome were reported to have taken up to 801 b The best return from trenches in the first channel is believed to have been 1601 b Prices paid on the river bank ranged from 6s 6d to 7s a lb.
