PROBLEMS IN MARRIAGE

Young Wives’ Panel Discussion In the interests of children of an unhappy marriage, is it better I for the husband and wife to stay' together and fight or should they' separate? This was one of the questions] put to a panel at the annual i husbands’ evening held by the< St. Mary’s, Merivale, Young! Wives’ Group. Members of the. panel were Mrs J. C. Garrett, Mrs G. Nuthall, Dr. D. H. Cum-1 mack and Archdeacon S. E. Woods. There must be extreme cases, the panel agreed, where a clean break was better for the children than to allow tension to mount, with the children taking sides in the parents’ disagreements. Wherever possible, though, reconciliation should be earnestly attempted. In lighter vein, the panel dis* cussed whether women worked harder than men. The male members generously conceded that New Zealand women, specially mothers of pre-school children, worked longer hours at more monotonous tasks and showed more patience than did their menfolk. “Men couldn’t stand up to it,” they agreed. Delinquency and Religion Other questions included “Is delinquency in today’s youth caused mainly by lack of religion?” “Should university entrance be restricted, and if so in what way?” “What are the basic principles necessary in teaching self-discipline to children?” “My child is rapidly becoming a scientific pincushion, should a child not acquire natural immunity to disease?” Nearly 60 persons, mostly married couples, attended the meeting. The vicar, Archdeacon E. A. Gowing, was the chairman.
