Appreciate —Tintagel Win Westport Double

(From Our O*.~n Reporter)

WESTPORT, October 4.

Appreciate, a hardy campaigner on West Coast courses for his Orari owner-trainer, L. H. Pratt, impressively won the Licensed Victuallers Handicap, the main event at the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting which opened yesterday at Patterson Park, lhe sting was out of the ground after a week of bad weather.

The Beau Repaire-Here Hini gelding revelled in the conditions to take over after four furlongs had been covered and after that he had the race well in hand. He has been a good winner for Mr Pratt and is a favourite with Westport racing crowds. Yesterday he was well handled by R. J. Skelton, who resumed a successful association as he also won the Roche Handicap on the Pratt-trained London Tower.

Appreciate was followed home by Royal Halyard, which confirmed his promising form of the Geraldine meeting on Monday, and the former Westport horse, Kaseno, which finished fast from fairly well back for third. The second leg. the Colvin Handicap, resulted in a comfortable win for Tintagel, the Riccarton candidate. The double paid £39 10s. There had been heavy rain all the week right up to the morning of the races, but the track, renowned for its recuperative powers, dried out quickly. There was a fair crowd present and the totalisator handled £14,089, compared with £15.818 on the same day last year. First Leg

Skyrain. Bobbie Burns. Anpreciate, Nehru, Whiohau and Royal Halyard led the field for four furlongs, where Appreciate was rushed to the front At that stage Kaseno and Canon were well back.

Appreciate carried on to the three ahead of Skyrain, Nehru. Royal Halyard. Uproar, Whiohau and Kaseno, with Bobbie Burns drifting to the back. Appreciate was untroubled in the run home to throw off a strong challenge by Royal Halyard, which in turn beat Kaseno comfortably. Nehru was fourth, ahead of Uproar, Prince Filou, which was never really going well, Whiohau, Skyrain, Bobbie Burns and Canon, which was pulled up short of the post. The second leg, the Colvin Handicap, was won impressively by Tintagel, one of J. S. Shaw’s Riccarton team. The Lucky Bag four-year-old led from start to finish. V Tintagel led out from Pyrites, a Westport horse having his first race for several months, with Balance, Heath, Pickard and Befana next and the well supported Corowa near the rear. The first four held their positions to the end. with Tintagel holding off Pyrites, which in turn had a slight margin over Balance, Heath and Prince Command, with the others well back. _ Prince Command was slow away. Maiden Race The Blenheim-trained Nardus took over at the three furlongs to win the Buller Stakes No. 1 in a good finish with Solaris, the warm each way favourite, which was not further back than second. Arjamand. a locally-trained galloper, came from a good way back for third, ahead of Good Fault, Question Mark. Northwood, Misty Flight and Siam, with the others strung out. Solaris, Misty Flight, Northwood, Lady Ribbon and Nardus were the most prominent to the three, when the last-named, confidently ridden by B. T. Jones, took over and won comfortably. Solaris beat the others just as easily. The Geraldine winner, London Tower, won the Roche Handicap most convincingly after always being in a handy position. He only had a half-head advantage over Arrow Royal, which had assisted in making the pace. Montreux finished on well for third but the Orari-trained horse was going much better than his opponents at the finish. Arrow Roval, London Tower, Newmarket, Bon Salut and Montreux were the leading bunch to the three, with Kalinita, Triple Event, Galina and Sevenoaks handy. Vivien Leigh was buried in the ruck early and drifted badly in the run home. London Tower just held on to beat Arrow Royal and Montreux, with Newmarket. Galina, Kalinita and Sevenoaks next. Vivien Leigh, the favourite, finished second last. There was another good finish to the Buller Stakes No. 2, when the three leaders for most of the journey, Glancing, Lady Minto and Solaris, battled it out over the last 50 yards. Solaris came through on the rails to just head oft Lady Minto, with Glancing a neck away third. It was a good effort on the part of the winner after being second in the opening event. Tlie place-getters led the field for the entire journey, closely attended by Sir Howe, Highly, Roa, Billy's Hope. Fast Seas and Silverwood. Roa finished on for a good fourth, ahead of- Fast Seas, Sir Howe, Highly, Morocco Girl and Billy's Hope. Unpopular Win Vivien Leigh’s success in tha Scanlon Handicap after failing badly earlier in the day was not popular with a small section of the crowd. The Pherozshah—Lorna Leigh mare worked to the lead almost from barrier rise and never gave anything else a chance, holding off Gold Raid and Kalinita comfortably. It was her third success in her last four starts at Patterson Park. Vivien Leigh led Gold Raid, Toss, Kalinita, Heathcliff and Nugget for the first five furlongs. The two leaders carried on. with Kalinita making up ground for third ahead of Nugget, which also finished on well, ahead of Heathcliff, Stentor. Hunting Melody and Toss. The favourite, Hunting Melody, was never galloping smoothly. Results:— BULLER STAKES NO. I, Ol £ 130; six furlongs. 3/3 NARDUS (10) 8-7 B. T. Jones 1 1/1 SOLARIS (14) 8-7 E. G.
