TERMITES FOUND IN BUSH AREA
White Ants In Maori House In Northland (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. October 4. Australian termites —the dread white ant—have been discovered near a bush area for the first time in New Zealand. The termites have eaten their way into a Maori Affairs Department house in an isolated Maori farming settlement at Rawhiti, on the Cape Brett Peninsula, Bay of Islands. This is the first time termites have been found north of Auckland. Previous infestations have been confined to limited areas of Auckland. New Plymouth. Cambridge, and Wellington. Forestry Department officials have always feared that termites could spread to New Zealand's forest land and chew the heart wood from valuable trees. The Bay of Islands County Council is seeking aid from Auckland’s joint local bodies’ Termite Control Committee in exterminating the termites.
