CRIMES BILL AND PROMOTION
Matters For Police Conference (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 4. Delegates from 15 police districts will assemble in Wellington on Tuesday for the threeday annual New Zealand Police Association conference. To be opened by the Minister of Police (Mr Connolly) and addressed by the Commissioner (Mr W. S. Brown) the conference is expected to be less contentious than some previous ones. It is understood that among the matters to be raised is a suggestion that British precedent should be followed in the Crimes Bill now before Parliament in retaining the death penalty for the murder of a policeman. Also to be discussed is the clarification of policy in the promotion of women police. At the moment women police have a salary bar after three years’ service, and the suggestion is that the bar should be removed and the question of promotion to higher ranks cleared. On the secular side a remit is to be presented on a proposal to set up wet and dry canteens in the same way as they operate in the armed services and the adoption of a standard police blazer. The conference will be presided over by the Dominion president (Mr C. W. Naylor).
