Yachting SELECTIONS FOR OLYMPICS
Flying Dutchman And Fin Classes (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. Sept. 25. A major step toward selecting New Zealand nominations for yachting at next year’s Olympic Games in Rome was taken at a special meeting of the New Zealand Yachting Federation today. Selections will be made in the Internation Flying Dutchman and Finn classes. The Koya! New Zealand Yacht Squadron and the Takapuna Boating Club, both in Auckland, are the federation’s administering authorities in these classes, and their representatives made recommendations at today's meeting. I After their recommendations. I the following decisions were made;— The Flying Dutchman national championships will be held off Maraetai, Auckland, beginning on March 5, 1960. The first seven available competitors will be eligible to go forward to the Olympic trials. The finn class will begin on March 19 at Brown’s Bay, Auckland, with a series of six races to be followed by a “change-boat series” to simulate the “balloted boat” system of the games.
In both cases the decision to limit the second phase has been to ensure that New Zealand’s best yachtsmen have been selected on merit and also to keep the standard of sailing on a high plane.
