BUTTER PRICES IN U.K.

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Sept. 23. Can butter grow much more expensive without there being a mass transfer of the people’s allegiances to margarine? ‘ asks the “Financial Times” commenting on this week’s increase in the export price to Britain of Danish butter. The increase, it is pointed out. was a relatively small one and would result in the housewife having to pay only id or at the most Id more per lb in the shops Danish butter alone with Dutch, and English when it was available, was in any case a good deal dearer than Empire varieties and was therefore presumably not bought by the most price conscious consumer. Even so the increase did suggest the question, the newspaper adds. Butter, now retailing at prices ranging from 3s lid to 4s 8d per lb. was twice as costly as margarine, which sold in the price range of about Is 9d to 2s 3d.
