Australian League Team Beaten

(N Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. September 23. Penalties, many of them given in good kicking positions, cost the touring Australian Rugby League team its first defeat of its English tour at St. Helens tonight when Lancashire beat Australia 30-22. The Kangaroos were penalised 18 times by the referee, George Smith, of Dewsbury. The Lancashire full-back, Bernard Ganley, wicked six penalties, which more than covered the margin of victory. The referee was especially severe on the Australian forwards. He penalised them for obstruction, for off-side in play-the-ball rucks for kicking at the ball when an opponent played it. and also for having a dummy half up when Lancashire played the ball. There was some anger in the Australian dressing room afterwards about these arbitrary interpretations. But the manager, Jack Argent, refused to comment. "The less said, the less trouble," he said.
