CLASH IN CUBA
Captured Rebels Led By American
• Rec. 10 p.m.) HAVANA. September 25.
Cuban troops captured 30 antiGovernment guerrillas in a clash yesterday with American-led rebel forces in the western province of Pinar del Rio, it was reported today. Official sources said the unidentified American leader of the band escaped into the hills with an unspecified number of men. Another American, also unidentified, was among those reported captured. Government forces captured a large quantity of arms and supplies from the guerrillas, including sub-machine guns, rifles, food, medicine and explosives, the official sources said. The clash occurred at the town of Consolacion del Sur, the scene a few days ago of a skirmish in which one soldier was killed.
At a meeting in Havana last night, the Cuban Cabinet decided to disband Cuba’s secret police from October 1. It also decreed temporary taxes ranging from 30 to 100 per cent, on a variety of imports in an effort to discourage foreign buying.
