Wage Increase
Sir, —Rising costs are the Inevitable result of increased wages. It is perfectly obvious that employers cannot pay higher wages to produce an article and sell it at the same price as before the increase. “Civis” writes about alleviating the lot of average working people. I think he should consider the lot of those unfortunate people who are living on a fixed income; also those whose income is, being reduced. Wage increases * depreciate the purchasing value of those incomes. Surely these are the people who deserve humane consideration. Regarding the Australian case quoted wages were pegged on a higher level. Consequently prices were bound to rise for some time. If wages were pegged, and an efficient price tribunal established to ensure manufacturers’ applications to increase prices were carefully scrutinised before being approved, then possibly we would have some stability.—Yours, etc., REALISTIC. September 24. 1959.
