Age Benefit
Sir, —I read in your paper that Miss Howard, Minister in charge of Social Security, is to investigate the age benefit. Ido hope she will remember the last increase given in wages, as this will undoubtedly cause living costs to rise, and the pensioner will be the hardest hit, and the greatest sufferer.—Yours, etc., PENSIONER. September 25, 1959.
Departmental Salaries Sir, —Like Mr McAlpine, I am amazed at the Government publishing the salaries of the heads of government departments. Surely this breeds communism. Just what must the lower-paid servant think should he read it? Why. next thing they will be publishing the amount granted in travelling allowances, trips overseas. etc., and this alone w'ould make the low'er-paid civil servants very dissatisfied. It is quite all right to publish the wages of all workers, nurses, age beneficiaries. etc., but don’t disclose the wages of the higher-paid, please. Even the Labour Government must know that we as taxpayers might get disgruntled.— Yours, etc., KEEP IT DARK. September 24. 1959.
