“Euronits”

Europe’s Economic Community mav soon have its own monetary unit —the Euronit—said a source close to the Belgian Government quoted by Reuter’s Brussels correspondent. The purpose of a special European currency would be to “increase the Common Market’s prestige on the world monetary market.” The Euronit would be based on a special Common Market fund to be created in conjunction with the existing six-nation overseas investment fund. The plan is expected to be submitted to the Common Market’s Council of Ministers during its forthcoming meeting.— London, September 22. Nine Points Of Rain Nine points of rain, the first since September 14, fell in Christchurch early yesterday morning. The weather office at Harewood airport recorded the nine points. Akaroa had two points, Kaikoura two, and Timaru six points. The rain yesterday did little more than freshen the lawns and gardens of the city, and a lot more is needed. “Lights Out” In Court It was "lights out” in the Pyramid mower case just before the adjournment at 4.30 p.m. yesterday. While taking up his position near the door to adjourn the Court, the Court orderly stood with his shoulder close to the wall, and inadvertently brushed against the double light switch, plunging the Courtroom into dimness for a few seconds. However, the lights were switched on again, and a somewhat embarrassed orderly resumed his position against the wall—this time a good 18 inches clear of the light switch. Trees At Burwood Burwood residents have complained of the shade cast on their properties by trees in Burwood Hospital plantation. The institutions committee reported to the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday that it had informed the Waimairi County Council that the removal of the trees would make the remainder of the plantation liable to damage by storm, and would expose the septic tank area. The trees were standing long before the houses were built. Sartorial Lapse A man’s appearance in the Supreme Court yesterday without a tie led to the divorce action in which he was a witness being stood down. “This man is not suitably dressed to appear in my Court,” Mr Justice Haslam told counsel for the petitioner When the case was called again later counsel apologised to his Honour for the witness’s “sartorial lapse.” “Kiwi Fruit” “Kiwi fruit” is now being sold in supermarkets in San Francisco, according to the Department of Industries and Commerce. The fruit is better known in New Zealand as Chinese gooseberries. The department says that the change of name is understandable because San Francisco has one of the largest urban Chinese communities outside China. It emphasises that New Zealand exporters should market their products in a manner and style acceptable to the market chosen Mobile X-Ray Unit The Health Department’s mobile X-ray unit was attended by 166 persons while it was in the Spreydon area yesterday. Today the unit will be at the corner of Colombo street and Somerfleld street from 9 a.m. to noon; Colombo street and Beaumont street from 12.45 p.m. to 2 p.m., and at the corner of Colombo street and Milton street from 2.45 p.m. to 4.15 p.m.
