‘CALCULATING’ WOMAN

Miss Devi From India (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 18. A calculating woman is Shakuntala Devi. In fact, her calculations would appear to leave most people standing—even mathematics professors. Miss Devi is one of those rare people to whom arithmetic means nothing and the answers to the most involved problems can be tossed off within seconds. Miss Devi is also an attractive, dark-eyed Indian woman only 28 years old, and she stepped off a plane from Nandi this afternoon with almost shy reserve and ir? a pretty blue sari. Born in Bangalore, India, Miss Devi revealed her talents at-the age of five when she used to sit beside her uncle who was studying mathematics at the university. At the age of six, she'baffled students and professors at the University of Mysore. Miss Devi went to Britain in 1950. Her ability astounded the experts and she has been credited with extracting the 20th root of a 42-digit number. Miss Devi hopes to demonstrate her ability in schools, colleges and universities, and also learn something of the country.

Mrs N. G. Page and Miss Sally Page left Wellington for England yesterday by the Rangitiki.
