S.E.A.T.O. ESSAY COMPETITION
Top Award To City Student
Second prize of £2O was awarded to Donald Brash of the University of Canterbury in the S.E.A.T.O. essay competition open to New Zealand secondary school pupils and university students between the ages of 17 and 21, according to a press release from the Department of External Affairs.
There was no first prize awarded because none of the entries received was of a sufficiently high standard. Third prize went to Robert May, of Hamilton Boys’ High School. The competition was sponsored by the S.E.A.T.O. organisation in New Zealand and the subject was “Collective Defence in Southeast Asia.” Fifteen entries were received but the Department considered none good enough to earn first prize. Merit prizes of £3 were awarded to Jennifer Couchman, Victoria University, Ann Burgin, Dunedin, Carmel Walsh, Mary Scally and Bernice Courname. all of Invercargill, and Paul Felton, Auckland.
