Hawford Road Park

Sir,—Rumours are going around the Opawa-St. Martins district that the City Council has abandoned or greatly modified its plans for a park on the site of the old Hawford road rubbish tip. A year or two back, residents petitioned strongly against any of this area being taken for housing, as was then proposed by a Labour councillor. It would, in fact, be a flagrant breach of faith. Residents put up for years with a dirty, dusty, foul-smelling, ratharbouring rubbish dump only on explicit assurances that their forbearance would be rewarded, in time, by a much-needed district amenity. May we be told, please, what is intended?—Yours, etc., AYNSLEY.

September 9. 1959. [The Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast). commenting on this letter, said he knew of no proposal to modify the original intention of developing the former rubbish tip into a park, to be known as Hansen Park.]
