GUINEAS AT AVONDALE
Wakatere Will Not Run
Wakatere, one of the leading two-year-olds in the Dominion last season, will not be run in the Avondale Guineas, the first of the classic races for three-year-olds this term, on the second day of the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting next Friday Because of the heavy state of the tracks in the Auckland district in recent weeks Wakatere would have had to contest the Guineas without the benefit of a preparatory race. For that reason his Takanini trainer, R. C. Verner, has decided a start for the Summertime gelding would be unwise.
When the ground firms Wakatere will probably contest a sprint race in the district to help him in his preparation for the Great Northern Guineas at Ellerslie on October 3.
Wakatere. which carries the colours of Sir Ernest Davis, won five of the six races he contested last season. His Only defeat was by the three-year-old Fountainhead in the Sixty-fourth Royal Stakes at Ellerslie. In the Two-year-old Free Handicap he was rated lib below the leading youngster Gayfair.
