UP AND COMING WINS WARWICK STAKE

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

SYDNEY, August 30.

The New . Zealand champion Up and Coming recorded his best performance in Australia to win yesterday's Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm.

Up and Coming, wHich started favourite at 5-4,’ was a long way from the lead passing the halfmile and had to make his run five horses wide round the home turn. But he quickly raced past the leaders in the straight, and went on to win, easily by a length and a quarter in very fast time. His time of Imin .24 l-10sec was only 1-lOsec outside the nee record made t>y Tarien in 1953.

Another New Zealand horse. Supertax (66-1), also put up an outstanding performance to deadheat for second with three-year-old Perouse (9-1). After the win bookmakers further cut the price of Up and Coming for the Epsom Handicap and he is a very short-priced favourite. The trainer M. McCarten said after the race that Sellwood had told him it had been a very good run, and said he was very pleased with the performance from an Epsom viewpoint. McCarten said later that he was undecided if he would give Up and Coming another run before the Epsom. If McCarten decides on another run for Up and Coming it will be in the weight-for-age Chelmsford Stakes <9 furlongs), at Randwick on Saturday week. Began Well Up and Coming began fairly well, but was back in seventh place on settling down. He was a long way from the lead when fifth at the half-mile. At this stage the New Zealand mare Yahabeebe, which had run to the front inside the first furlong, had the field well stretched out behind her. Grey Ghost, which was on the inside. kept Up and Coming wide out on the track most of the way. When Sellwood started to make his move nearing the turn, J. Thomson also moved up on Grey Ghost, with the result that Up and Coming was five wide going round the turn. But Up and Coming then quickly raced to the front, and the race was all over when he got clear after passing the Leger. Supertax, which was having his first start in Australia, put up an outstanding performance to deadheat for second. He looked much

above himself in condition before the race. He was a long wav back in eighth place to the half-mile, but got a good run along the inside from there on.

Supertax raced into sixth place at the turn, and finished on strongly on the inside in the straight. He will be greatly improved by the run. and there is no doubt we will have to be reckoned with in most of the big spring races in Melbourne. Fast improving sprinter Tudor House yesterday raced into calculations as an Epsom Handicap) possibility when he won the Wallacia Handicap (six furlongs), at Warwick Farm His trainer. Fred Allsop, after the race, said he would give Tudor House one more test before deciding definitely bn an Epsom start. Tudor House yesterday carried 8-10 —lolb above the minimum. In the Epsom Handicap he is weighted on the minimum, 7-0.

Tudor House yesterday appeared to have the race won a long way from home, when he was trailing the pacemaker, Magic Kingdom, at the half-mile. Sellwood took him to the lead half-way down the straight and the four-year-old then held off a determined late challenge from the lightly-weighted ’ Merry Amber (7-7).

The distance was much too short for the Brisbane Cup winner, Treasured Link. • The New Zealand-bred Luck's a Fortune was never in the call, while Royal Jester was totally unsuited by such a short sprint. Bookmakers have made several big changes in their markets for the Epsom Handicap following yesterdays racing at Warwick Farm. Main changes were the sharp cuts in the prices of Supertax and Perouse.
