SEPARATE BRAKES ON CARAVANS
Views Reported To S.LM.U.
First reports show that automobile'associations do not think the compulsory installation of separate braking systems on caravans and trailers is yet warranted. Both the Otago and Canterbury associations hhve reported to the South Island Motor Union that so long as the towed vehicle is not more than 75 per cent, of the weight of the towing vehicle, present warrant-of-fitness requirements and speed limits are sufficient safeguards on braking efficiency. Mr T. E. V. Turpin (Otago) told the executive that, outside the club investigation, he had ascertained that an hydraulic braking system would cost £7O to £BO. vacuum-assisted more than £6O, and mechanical about £53. Assuming that about half the caravans and trailers in the country required separate brakes, the cost could be £4 million to £5 million at least half of which would need to come out of overseas funds. The union will await the views of other associations before giving its opinion.
