Television
Sir, —“Keep on' Snoring, New Zealand” sounds like a spoilt child who must have an expensive new toy because the kid next door has one. He screams with rage at anyone who would make him wait a little. I, too, would like to see television introduced into New Zealand, but, unlike your correspondent, I think its .influence on the home and family life has to be carefully considered. Television “on the cheap”—that is, paid for by soap and liquor advertisements, as in America and Australia—can be utterly degrading. England, thanks to the Standards set by the 8.8. C. and now, of course, emulated by commercial television, has made it a valuable and often uplifting medium of education, culture, v and entertainment. Let us make sure we know the alternatives and choose with our eyes open.— Yours, etc., TRAVELLER. August 29, 1959.
