Restriction On Drugs
Sir, —I was dismayed to read this morning that from September 1 doctors will be able to prescribe most drugs for a period of only seven days, with a sevenday repeat, instead of 10 days. This will mean a fortnightly instead of a three-weekly visit, and, over a period, will cost chronic patients a substantial sum, which those on an invalidity or other small pension can ill afford. I am, of course, referring to patients whose doctor is not a “social security” one. I do not see why, in the case of general practitioners, the charge cannot be made uniform. This new directive will also mean an extra burden on the social security accounts in view of the fact that more visits are required by a patient, and every visit costs the Government 7s 6d.—Yours, etc., ’ IMPATIENT.
