Control Of Traffic
Sir.—Mr Connolly seems to have an old-fashioned view on road traffic. It does not merely have to be controlled; it has to be policed. This can best be done by policemen, as is obvious to anyone who has lived in a country where there is a density of traffic. Instead of waiting till the National Party returns and traffic expands again, the Police Department should take over now the enforcement of the Transport Act The other functions of the Transport Department could be absorbed by the Education Department and the Ministry of Works. Parking meters could be controlled in the same way as chairs for hire are in Hyde Park and English seaside resorts—by council employees. Why, for instance, should a trained traffic officer in a place like South Canterbury be tied to a meter patrol in Timaru?— Yours, etc., OLD KENT ROAD August 26, 1959.
