Two Surprises In M.C.C. Team

(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, August 25. Only seven of the M.C.C. team which toured Australia earlier this year have been included in the side announced tonight to play in the West Indies at the end of the year. Fourteen players have been named and one or two fast bowlers will be picked at the end of the English county cricket season, depending on form and fitness. The team has two surprises—D. Allen, the 23-year-old Gloucestershire off-spinner who is in his first full season of first-class cricket; and K. Andrew, the 29 T year-old Northampton wicketkeeper who faded from the international scene after the 1955 tour of Australia. The team is: P. B. 11. May, captain (Surrey). aged 29; M. C. Cowdrey, vice-captain (Kent), 26; D. Allen (Gloucestershire), 23; K. Andrew (Northamptonshire), 29; K. Barrington (Surrey), 28; E. R. Dexter (Sussex), 24; T. Greenbrough (Lancashire), 27; R. Illingworth (Yorkshire), 27; G. Pullar (Lancashire), 24; M. J. K. Smith (Warwickshire), 29; J. B. Statham (Lancashire), 29; R. Subba Row (Northamptonshire), 27; R. Swetman (Surrey), 25; F. Trueman (Yorkshire), 28. The seven survivors from the team which toured Australia are: May, Cowdrey, Statham, Trueman, Dexter, Subba Row and Swetman. Those cast aside include: T. G. Evans, T. E. Bailey, J. C. Laker, G. A. R. Lock, T. W. Graveney. W. Watson, P. E. Richardson, P. J. Loader, F. T. Tyson, C. A. Milton and J. Mortimore. It appears that Evans’s wonderful test career has come to an end. Since his debut in 1946 he has appeared in 91 tests, a record number for any player, and he has made 8 tours —four to Australia. two to South Africa and two of the West Indies Now he is superseded by Swetman and Andrew, who in turn were his deputies on the last two visits to Australia.
