FLEMINGTON WINNERS
N.Z, Horses Do Well
New Zealand-bred horses had a good day at Flemington last Saturday. They succeeded in winning four of the seven races on the Melbourne Racing Club's programme. The opening event, the Sandhurst Hurdles, was won by Foxmint, a son of Foxbridge. His dam. Mahafrid (by Nizami), was bred at the Trelawney Stud where Foxbridge stood. She was a daughter of Aureola and is a half-sister to Foxola whose progeny included the good gallopers. Arawa, Takatu, Heir Apparent and Copernicus.
Princess Faux beat 16 other three-year-old fillies in the seven furlongs Berwick Handicap. Princess Faux, whose sire is Faux Tirage, is the second foal of the Sabaean mare Impeccable. She was bred at the Te Parae Stud at Masterton and was purchased at the 1958 National Yearling Sales at Trentham for 350gns. The weight-for-age J. J. Liston Stakes was won by Gay Saba, a brother to the former brilliant Riccarton-trained sprinter Tamrin. Gay Saba, a five-year-old entire, is by Sabaean from Dunmu rry.
Lord, the runner-up in the Liston Stakes, was also New Zea-land-bred. His dam, Broadway, which was bred in Australia, was brought to New Zealand to be mated when retired to the stud. Lord, by Targui, was her second foal.
The fourth New Zealand-bred winner on Saturday was Monasterevan which won the Second Members’ Highweight. Monasterevan, which was ridden by the former New Zealand horseman, K. A. Nuttall, is a four-year-old gelding by Pride of Kildare from Baldora. His dam, which was unraced, is by Balloch out of Wyndora, a sister to Pelisse, the unraced dam of Cambridge, the 1957 Brisbane Cup winner.
