ROAD COURTESY CAMPAIGN
Awards Described As “A Joke”
The . road safety campaign was I a joke because persons were granted courtesy awards for obeying rules, said Mr R. W. Smith, a representative of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union, at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee, last evening. “As far as our organisation is concerned, the whole campaign was cheapened because the awards were given to persons who observed the road rules. It became quite a joke around Christchurch for persons to say: ‘Have you got your courtesy award yet’’’ ’’ said Mr Smith. “That is absolutely incorrect.’’ replied the Traffic Superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr G. P. Kellar). “I personally saw to it that the campaign was not cheapened at all. The awards were granted for out-and-out courtesy and not to those who obeyed regulations as laid down by the City Council.”
