U.S. ANTARCTIC AIRLIFT
Advance Party Of 65 Men Arrives
An American Globemaster transport plane arrived at Christchurch airport at 8.53 a.m. yesterday with cargo and servicemen for the 1959-60 season of United States Antarctic operations.
The men included an advance party of 55 airmen and a Navy group of 10. The commander of the air squadron (LieutenantColonel D. R. Bridges), the camp commandant for Harewood (Major O. P. D. Canant) and the squadron operations officer (Major F. B. Frost) were among the senior officers-
The task of the advance party will be to prepare for the arrival of the main Globemaster force of 10 planes and 14 crews as well as ground crew and support crew arriving in Christchurch every few days during next month. Nearly 400 men will be involved in this season’s airlift between New Zealand and Antarctica.
