ASSAULT ON WIFE OF CONSTABLE
Whangarei Man Sentenced
(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, August 25. Four years’ gaol was imposed on Joseph Allan McDonald, aged 26, unemployed, of Whangarei, when he appeared for sentence before Mr J. R. Herd, S.M.. in the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court today. On August 17 he had admitted assaulting Alice Frances Hull when she was acting in aid of a constable, escaping from lawful custody at Maungaturoto, and being in possession by night of house-breaking instruments.
McDonald and Melvin John Tipa, aged 24, also unemployed, of Whangarei, and formerly of Dunedin, had jointly admitted taking two cars for their own use, interfering with a car, wilfully damaging a padlock, and assaulting Richard Robert Hull so as to cause him actual bodily harm. Tipa had also admitted taking two cars for his own use, stealing a registration plate, and escaping from lawful custody at Maungaturoto. Today Tipa also admitted a breaking and entering charge. He was convicted on this new charge. Because of it, and because probation officers’ reports on him had not all been received. Tipa was remanded in custody until September 14.
