DELEGATE FROM WALES

Mr E. Rees Farmed At Met liven

One of the two Welsh delegates to the International Rugby Board which will meet in Christchurch on Friday, Mr E. Rees, spent some years in Canterbury before World War 1 and farmed for a period near Methven. Mr Rees was born in Wales and jhe came to New Zealand in 1912. iHe joined the New Zealand Rifle i Brigade when war broke out and served in West Africa and France. I When he was discharged he re- | turned to Wales and entered a drapery business in Maesteg. i Mr Rees said in Christchurch {yesterday that a Welsh Rugby (team would like to come to New {Zealand and a tour was not iinj possible. "But we have heavy pro- { grammes in Wales and it is a I point as to whether we can spare j i the players.” The injuries of the Lions had prevented some of their best players from playing as often as was desired, but an encouraging feature of the team’s displays was the way the forw-ards had been improving on the tour, said Sir Wavell Wakefield, M.P., who is one of the two English representatives on the international board. Sir Wavell Wakefield, a former captain of England, who has been capped 31 times for England, said he was glad that the Lions had been throwing the ball around in their games, but their injuries had been a great disappointment. He thought that the forwards were playing better than when the Lions last toured South Africa in 1955.

Sir Wavell Wakefield captained the England team against the 1924 All Blacks and saw Cyril Brownlie ordered from the field. He was chosen as captain of the British Isles team which toured New Zealand in 1930, but he could not make the tour and was replaced by F. D. Prentice.
