Spike Heels

Sir, —Certain goods are “off” the New Zealand purchase lists. Import restrictions eliminate extras, luxury goods, or those competing with petted local products unduly. Are stiletto heels necessities? Are they healthy to stilt on? Are -they fostering good local relations or overseas publicity? Are they subject to import licence or are they made from local or imported hardwoods the strength and durability of which might be less wastefully employed growing in shelter forests or used for good industrial purposes? Might the production of “stilettos” not comfortably be banned? A few restored tram rails would end their popularity.—Yours, etc., MERE RUMINATION. August 21, 1959.

Sir, —Has our so-called democracy become so gutless that our leaders in church and school and State are afraid ; to demand that Parliament should permit the manufacture or importation of only that footwear which conforms to d proper standard of health. So slavish is the public mind that if the leaders of society decreed that backbones are out of fashion, the untutored mob would have to follow suit. Surely all the money now wasted on physical education, instructors should have convinced everyone that heels not more than one inch deep and with a two by two base are healthier and happier than spiked heels.—Yours, etc., TAXPAYER. August 21, 1959.
