Taxation, Then and Now
Legislation fixing the rates of income tax for the current year states that each taxpayer (other than a company, a public authority, or an unincorporated body) will qualify for a rebate of 10 per cent., with a maximum of £3O. Thus the basic rate of tax, 3s in the £, is to be reduced by 3.6 d to 2s 8.4 d. For
1958-59, each taxpayer was granted a rebate of 12} per cent., with a maximum of £37 10s. This meant that the basic rate was reduced by 4.5 d to 2s 7.5 d. Land tax rates are unchanged this year. Because of Mr Nordmeyer’s insistence on the tax “ reliefs ” provided by his 1959 Budget, comment would be superfluous.
