ADDINGTON MEETING
Large Crowd In Fine Weather
A brilliantly sunny day with only a light breeze and an almost cloudless sky brought a large crowd to Addington on Saturday for the second and final day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s National meeting, Patrons, whether punters or merely spectators, enjoyed one of the spring's most pleasant days. Dame Fashion donned her motley for the day. Light-weight garments mingled with the old season’s familiar woollens. Winter suits, ensembles or coats were favourites. A number of younger women chose to wear tailored woollen dresses without coats.
In spite of the perfect opportunity, few women aired genuine spring apparel. It is hard .to choose appropriate g#rb4propenair functions in between’seasons, but Christchurch women seem unduly pessimistic: most ran no risk of being chilled in the shade by any winds. Ever since last Saturday’s meeting spring had progressed. The blossom tree by the kiosk was further out and the willows north of the course were freshly green all their winter rustiness gone The lawn inside the trotting course itself was newly mown and other lawns were firm underfoot compared with last week’s muddiness. Only the alps were still definitely wintry, their snow-capped chains dying away on a sun-glazed north-west horizon.
Mrs W. M. Olllvier, wife of the president of the club, entertained the following in the women’s box of the stewards’ stand:—Mesdames J. R. Davidson, C. S. Thomas. C. E. Hoy, R. W. Saunders, J. E. Prendergast, C. E. Evans. A. E. Laing, A. J. Nicoll, H T. Fuller, C. M. Ollivier, L. A. Bennett, D. T. McCormick, F. L. Scott, J. M. Louisson. and C. S. Peate.
