It was not until after Princess Faux (20/1) had won that he discovered the error. It was too late to do anything about it—fortunately for Mr Marshall. Number 9, second leg of the double, was Regal Pine, 100/1. This meant two winning tickets worth a total of £2038 12s for Mr Marshall, and he should have lost 10s.
The Princess Faux-Regal Pine double paid £lOl9 6s—odds of 4176/1. Only seven winning tickets were taken out. Outsiders won the first three races at Flemington, and bookmakers won heavily. Foxmint (66/1) won the Sandhurst Hurdle, Princess Faux (20/1) won the Berwick Handicap, and the 100-to-one Regal Pine won the Montrose Handicap. In the fourth race, the evenmoney favourite Lord, was beaten by Gay Saba. Punters heckled the riders of the beaten favourites as they returned to scale.
