Sam Snead and Cary Middlecoff have accepted invitations to represent the United States in the seventh International Golf Championship and Canada Cup matches at Melbourne, Australia, from November 18 to 21.
Announcement of their acceptance was made by Mr Frank Pace, president of the International Golf Association (1.G.A.), yesterday. Snead, golf’s most successful money winner, and Middlecoff. who led the United States professionals in total earnings for the last 10 years, were selected at the request of W. G. Walkley, chairman of Australia's I.G.A. committee.
In 1956, Snead teamed with Ben Hogan to win the Canada Cup at Wentworth. England. In 1957. he tied for second place in individual honours with Gary Player, of South Africa, and Dave Thomas, of Britain, in the International Golf Trophy competition at Tokyo. In 1958, Snead was forced to withdraw after 36 holes of the tournament at Mexico City because of a back ailment. Middlecoff. twice United States open champion, will be competing in the International Golf Association championship and Canada Cup play for the first time. Angel Miguel, of Spain, won the individual championship in the tournament last year at Mexico City and will defend the International Golf Trophy at Melbourne Harry Bradshaw and Christy O'Conner, of Ireland, won the Canada Cup and will defend the team trophy.
After this year's matches at the Royal Melbourne Club, the 1960 International Golf Association championship and Canada Cup matches will be played at Dublin. Ireland, from June 23 to 26.
