SALLY BOY IN FINE WIN
Challenge Stakes
Contest
The Greenpark-owned and trained Sally Boy gained a first win when he led practically from end to end in the Canterbury Challenge Stakes. His 2min 38 4-ssec for the 10 furlongs was an outstanding effort for a three-year-old so early in the season. He finished full of running and his effort was warmly applauded as E. T. Hubbard returned with him to the birdcage. A colt by Garrison Hanover from Sally Walla, he was bred by his trainer. He raced well last season and his win was overdue. He is the first winner credited to his sire, whose oldest progeny in this country are three-year-olds. Sally Boy took the lead from Arania before the end of a strongly-run first furlong. Arania was trailing Sally Boy with six furlongs left, followed by Velvet Drive, Dark Wonder, Calumite, Bon Deed, Mystic Star and Katanga, with Damian four places further back.
Damian improved from the halfmile and followed Sally Boy, Arania and Calumite into the straight, with Dark Wonder, Katanga, Hindu Princess, Teryman and Space King following. Sally Boy gave no signs of weakening and he was not troubled to win by three lengths. Arabia raced right up to her best to hold second place two and a half lengths in front of Damian, which recorded 2min 364-ssec for the 10 furlongs and was far from disgraced. Calumite was a similar distance back fourth, clear of Space King, which shaded Dark Wonder and Hindu Princess. Then came Katanga, Teryman and Sun Chief, which did not improve at any stage of the race. Commonwealth and Prince lost ground at the start.
