SOUTH CANTERBURY BEATS SERVICES
Ten Points Gained In Last Ten Minutes
(New Zealand Press Association)
TIMARU, August 23. South Canterbury beat Combined Services. 23-8, in a representative Rugby match at Fraser Park, Timaru, yesterday. The Services team led 8-5 at half-time, and up to that stage victory seemed well within their grasp as the South Canterbury defence was often under pressure to withstand the attacks of a fast backline. In the second half, the South Canterbury forwards gradually gained the ascendency, winning the ball freely from scrums and rucks. The Combined team’s defence crumbled in the last 10 minutes when South Canterbury added 10 points.
The five-eighths, P. T. McAndrew and G. Blake, were a tricky pair and they generally played a major hand in the back attacks. The big full-back, M. D. Watson, kicked four conversions, a. penalty, and scored a try for South Canterbury. Watson's long and accurate kicking was a feature of the match. Other scorers for South Canterbury were J. Cole, R. Nolan and J. Senior. For Combined Services, McAndrew scored a try and J. K. Lay kicked a conversion a_nd a penalty.
