POWER PYLON DANGER
“No Objection To Fencing”
The New Zealand Electricity Department had no objection to its power pylons in Burnside Park being fenced by the Waimairi County Council, said the department’s district electrical engineer (Mr D. L. Grant). He was commenting on the council’s decision to take this step to prevent unauthorised persons from climbing the pylons. Mr Grant would not comment, however, on the council’s intention of charging the cost of the fencing to the department. Admitting that there had been accidents from unauthorised persons climbing the pylons, he added that it was just as dangerous, to climb lattice poles used by rural power supply authorities Both carried wires which could give a lethal shock. Some farmers had fenced the department’s poles on their properties. but there were “literally thousands” unfenced throughout the country, said Mr Grant. All pylons carried danger notices, which even children, if they were old enough to climb the pylons, should be able to read.
