SMOKE DAMAGE TO STOCK

Smouldering Clothes Found By Manager

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 23.

A smouldering cupboard of clothes caused heavy smoke damage to stock at Hallenstem Brothers store in Princes street, at Dunedin, before the fire brigade arrived on the scene at 7.39 on Saturday morning. Although an accurate estimate of the damage could not be made, the manager (Mr H. R. Wood) said it would run into thousands of pounds. There was little structural damage. What could easily have developed into a major blaze was averted by the arrival of Mr Wood, who ’ entered the smokefilled shop at 7.35 a.m. to give the alarm.

Mr Wood intended to start stocktaking with other members of the staff at 8 a.m., but came earlier to attend to some office work.
