Chief Cashier Likely Steeplechase Favourite At Wingatui

A decision on the programme for the double acceptor Chief Cashier at the Otago Hunt Club s meeting has been left until this morning. Chief Cashier, a winner over country at Riccarton, will probably be favourite in the i‘ace chosen for him—either the Otago Hunt Cup Steeeples or the Irwin Steeples.

Last year. Chief Cashier was favourite and runner-up in the Irwin steeples, a race for amateur riders. In the meantime he has won the Waimate Hunt Cup Steeples, the Christchurch Hunt’s Westenra Cup, and the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Enfield Steeples. Formal and Airfield have been scratched for the Otago Hunt Cup Steeples. ' Canterbury will have two representatives, one being the Ric-carton-trained Scotch Emblem, which was taken south yesterday. This will be Scotch Emblem's first racing experience over country,

but he has schooled competently. Clever jumping marked some of his hurdling performances, and the Wingatui fences should not trip him. Scotch Emblem’s chance looks brighter now that a heavy track is practically certain. Canterbury’s other representative will be the Washdyke-trained King’s Lace. This Timanova gelding did no good against the hurdlers at the Grand National meeting, but he won comfortably over the light Waimate country in July. Hillis’s Mount W. J. Hillis, who won the Grand National Steeplechase on Capet three weeks ago. will ride Struggle, one of two representatives for R. J. Cochrane’s Gore stable.

Struggle faces this test with an encouraging form background of seconds in his last four races. Persia is the other representative from the Cochrane stable. He was fourth in the Enfield Steeples. . won by Chief Cashier, at the Grand National meeting. Spiloch, another member of the Cochrane team, is selected to win the Tally-Ho Handicap, the first leg of the main double. The likely favourite for the second leg, the Wingatui Handicap. is Ben Ledi, a stablemate of Chief Cashier. Ben Ledi and Chief Cashier are trained at Wingatui by H. A. Apderton. On-course Double There will be a double for course patrons on the Vauxhall and Taieri Hack Handicaps. The finish of the first leg may be dominated by members of the Wingatui team of D. G. O’Neill. Carbonett, Golden Glynnis and Chief General, all smart gallopers, will represent the O’Neill stable. Kelton will have Jiis last start as a hack in the Taieri Handicap He will be ridden by the stable apprentice, J. R. Dowling, who won on the War Game gelding at Riccarton a fortnight ago. Dowling will be able to claim a full allowance of 71b. so Kelton will carry 8-13. Kelton’s strongest rival may be Supreme Effort, which beat all but the brilliant Admiral’s Fair over seven furlongs on the second day of the Grand National meeting. • The fields, with form and riders, are:— SEAVIEW HACK AND HUNTERS’ HURDLES, Of £250; one mile and a half. 0577 Horatius (7) G.
