HIGH WINDS AND RAIN
Deep Depression Hits Northern N.Z. (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 2. Lashing winds and_ rain swept across Auckland today after a premature summer’s day had enticed people out on Saturday. With gusts of wind up to 55 miles an hour, conditions on the Waitemata harbour were described as among the worst this winter. A deepening depression which moved over Northland early this morning caused flooding on the Whangarei-Russell road and strong winds were experienced. Rivers and creeks in the north rose rapidly, and in the Kawakawa and Hikurangi swamp areas there were large volumes of surface water. Winds had dropped and the rain had eased in the north and in Auckland by tonight.
