PAPARUA COUNTY LIGHTING
Better Lights For Town Streets Streets in town districts of Paparua county are becoming better lighted with a steady county council programme for improvement. Already most streets in Hornby and Sockburn have better lighting, work is under way at Islington, and a start should be made soon at Templeton. Both main roads and back streets have the new lighting. There are blue mercury vapour lights along the streets and yellow sodium lights at crossroads, junctions and bus turn-rounds. The Springs-Ellesmere Electric Power Board designed the lighting pattern for the streets for the Paparua County Council. A start was made on the main roads about four years ago and in (he back streets little more than two years ago.
The new lighting in the streets makes it easier for people walking. cycling or driving.
Strong Contrast
Cross-roads and juctions stand out clearly with the mercury lights backing the sodium lights. One aim of the power board was .to make it more pleasant for women and children to walk along (the streets at night and not be j disturbed by the shadows cast Iby the old-type street lights. In the newer parts of Hornby ■it is possible to look from one lend to the other of most streets and to pick out easily the silhouettes of cyclists, parked cars and people walking. | The contrast between the old 'lighting and the new is seen in i those streets in Sockburn where Ithe new lights have not yet been installed. ■ Nearby streets are well lighted. I but the streets with the old lights (have ‘he typical shadows and dark patches of the naked bulb streetlamps. Hornby people are now getting used to their blue and yellow street lights and it should not be long before the rest of the people (. in Paparua county towns are | taking the light! for granted, too.
