BERI CUP MATCH AT TIMARU

Narrow Win For Waimate /From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU. August 2. More enterprise and combination in the backs swung the game Wajmate’s way when Geraldine and Waimate played off for the Beri Cup at Fraser Park on Saturday. The Beri Cup is contested each season between the winner and runner-up in the senior competition. On Saturday, Waimate won by 17 to 16. but its superiority was more marked than the score would indicate. Its backs looked the better attacking unit, and it was only Geraldine’s strong cover defence which stopped tries.

The pivot of most of the Waimate attacks was the sturdy little second five-eighths, R. Barlow, who breached the defence several timts in the first half. I. Proudfoot wao an outstanding line-out forward for Waimafe, arid he received excellent support from M. Scott in the second half. Geraldine’s best forwards were the .captain, G. Sugrue, and the other flanker B. Beker —both big. hustling, fast forwards. Both fullbacks, M. D. Watsdn (Waimate) and N. Bain (Geraldine), were very sound in most of their play, but neither showed his usual accuracy ib goal kicking, several penalties being missed in a game which was marked by many infringements. Watson, however, did kick two conversions, a penalty, and a fine 45yard dropped goal. He attempted one penalty from 60 yards out, the ball just falling short of the posts. Waimate’s other points were from tries by Barlow and J. Pierce. 1. Gaulter, G. Sugrue and A. Quigleyscored for Geraldine, and Bain kicked a penalty and a conversion.
