WHALEMEAT BANNED
Sale Only By Pet Shops
The Department of Health has banned the sale of whalemeat in butchers' shops in Christchurch, although it may still be sold In pet shops. The ban was imposed because of the lack of control over the killing, handling and transport of whalemeat from Picton, and the consequent possibility of contamination, said a department insoector. He said the meat could easily be contaminated and pass on infection to meat intended for human consumption. Butchers in Christchurch have been asked to withdraw the meat from sale. The inspector said it was illegal to sell any meat under uncontrolled conditions.
