TAKEN AS STATE FOREST LAND
Open Tops Country Near Lewis Pass About 48.000 acres of open tops country in the Lewis Pass area has been set apart as permanent State forest land, according to the Gazette. This area of open country is Crown land. According to the Gazette about 7000 acres was part of the “Glenhope” station and about 40,000 acres was part of “The Poplars.” The leases of the areas have been surrendered to the Crown. It is all above the scenic reserves in the Lewis Pass area and existing State forests of beech, and has not been grazed. The effect of the proclamation in the Gazette is to give the New Zealand Forest Service control of the open tops country bordering on its protection beech forests.
The country is between the Lewis Pass and the Hope river, and is at the heads of the Hope, Nina, and Doubtful rivers. There are large areas of beech forest on the walls of the valleys of these rivers. The peaks in this area are remarkable even in height. They vary from about 5700 feet to 6100 feet Several of them are named after operas, shortened in form, such as Faust, Lucia and Lucrezia.
