ALL BLACK TOUR
Citizens’ Body Proposed
A proposal that a Citizens’ Al! Black Tour Association to oppose discrimination in the selection of the 1960 All Black team be established in Christchurch will be submitted to a public meeting on Wednesday, September 16. This decision was reached by an informal but widely representative meeting of Christchurch citizens in the Canterbury Museum lecture theatre on Sunday afternoon.
Those present unanimously agreed that the primary object of establishing a Christchurch committee similar to those already established in Auckland and Wellington was to fight racial discrimination in any form within New Zealand. “We are not concerned with the expression of opinions in regard to the racial or any other policies in South Africa,” said the Rev A. A. Brash, who presided. “Our concern is that issues involving the relationships between the two races in New Zealand should be dealth with in accordance with our own declared policies.” It was agreed that the objective of establishing a Citizens’ All Black Tour Association was as follows:
“To combat racial discrimination in the selection of the 1960 Rugby team to tour South Africa and to demand the abandonment of the tour if absolute equality of treatment cannot be assured.” An interim committee to prepare for the public meeting was set up as follows: Chairman, the Rev. A. A. Brash; secretaries. Messrs N. A. Collins and J. Gilbert: committee, Drs. R. Duff and W. Rosenberg. Messrs W. A. Mcates. J. Broomfield. C. E. Lewis, J. Wilson. B. J. Kearns. R. Thompson and a representative of the Maori tribal committee
