“PRINCESS JU JU”

St. Mary’s College Presentation

Those who appreciated the freshness of young people’s voices and the spontaneity of their acting were pleased with the latest effort, of the pupils of St. Mary’s College. The three-act operetta, "Princess Ju Ju” was enthusiastically received by a large audience at the St. James’ Theatre last evening. A great deal of care had been taken in setting the scenes and planning the colour combinations in this production, and as a result many charming effects were achieved. The oriental note was well sustained; it was sometimes very dignified, and occasionally bizarre or even comic. Robin Khouri made an attractive princess, and her singing was a feature of the performance. Her best numbers probably came in Act II; but she was also heard in some agreeable songs with the chorus, particularly in Act I. The mighty emperor was a somewhat sinister figure, and here Ailecn O’Sullivan made up in dignity what she lacked in stature. The Emperor’s insinuating adviser was interpreted with subtlety by Patricia Maguire: and the executive. though a little subdued in manner, certainly looked the part. This role was acted my Margaret Mac Shane.

The three princes disguised as minstrels were all quite different; and one of them Fu Shu. played by Colleen Gilroy, provided most of the comedy in “Princess Ju Ju.” This was well done in a quiet but individual way. Prince Shee and Prince Go Bang were acted by Patricia Donnelly and Eleanor Capper respectively These three together were particularly happy in their lively umbrella dance. The chorus and ensembles were graceful, and mention must be made of the playing of the college orchestra, conducted on this occasion by Mary Buchanan. The final performance of “Princess Ju Ju” will be given at the St. James’ Theatre this evening. —C.E.S.
