Heavy Seas At
Timaru
(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, July 27. Heavy seas are affecting shipping at the port of Timaru. The Port Curtis, which arrived on Saturday morning from Bluff, was hove to about 10 miles east of the port, and this afternoon was diverted to Lyttelton, She is expected to return on Thursday.
The Pipiriki, which was delayed on Saturday evening, left Timaru on Sunday morning, and the Kaitoke sailed this morning for Dunedin. She was scheduled to sail for Oamaru, but conditions there were not favourable. The Tiroa was ready to sail on Saturday morning, but north-east gales and heavy seas have kept her in harbour. She is berthed at No. 1 wharf. The Calm, which arrived on Saturday, and the Karu, which entered port on Sunday. are at No. 3 north, and the Maranui, which berthed on Friday, and the Breeze, which arrived on Sunday, are at No. 2 wharf. The Port Sydney is due to arrive direct from Hobart tomorrow afternoon, and is believed to be carrying passengers who will land at Timaru. The harbourmaster, Captain F. J. Callan, said the seas were the worst experienced for several years, there having been no letup since Friday. The Timaru fishing fleet has been in harbour since Friday. The engineer to the Timaru Harbour Board (Mr B. W. Charman) said that as soon as the weather cleared it would be necessary to take some more soundings in the depths, and also to inspect the extension, which has been pounded by the heavy seas. On Saturday and yesterday the seas were pouring over the end of the extension, and it is possible that some rocks have been shifted.
