American Women Lose; Men Win (N.Z Press Association —Copyright) PHILADELPHIA, July 19 The United States defeated the Soviet Union by 127 points to 108 today at the end of a two-day athletic meeting. The sensational new sprinter, 21-year-old Ray Norton, won the 200metre sprint on a curved track in the brilliant time of 20.7 sec. Yesterday the rangy negro won the 100 metres, and anchored the winning 400-metre relay team. In a separate, women's contest the Russians beat the United States, 60-40. Russia's Tamara Press broke the listed world record for the women's shot put When she tossed the shot 55ft 6Jin. Miss Press’s heave eclipsed the world record of 54ft lljin, set by Gallnz Zybina, of Russia, in 1956. but did not match her own toss of 56ft 7in, which still is awaiting official recognition. The United States men were first and second in the 200, 800, and 1500 metres, and the 400 metres hurdles. Tennessee’s Lucinda Williams broke the American record for the women’s 200 metres with a 23.45ec run, clipping half a second off the time held by Isabella Daniels, who finished second today.
