RACING Cheyenne Sprints Fast At Riccarton

Cheyenne and Search Warrant were companions in one of the best sprints at Riccarton yesterday. Horses with engagements at the Christchurch Hunt and Grand National meetings galloped about 40ft out on the course proper under ideal conditions.

The work was also marked by a display of fast jumping by the Riccarton ’chasers, Masai and Border Reiver.

Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) was going well alongside Search Warrant (S. J. Martin) finishing six furlongs in Imin 18 l-ssec. They went fast early,' and took 52 3-5 sec for the last half-mile, but neither was bustled near the end. Search Warrant has not raced since Easter. He was galloped on and was not fit to race earlier in the winter. The stablemates McCool (G. W. Mein) and Shoal <C. McDonald) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 19 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 4-5 sec. They stayed on terms to the end. Smart Sprint Prince Filou (A. H. Eastwood) led Keep Time (E. G. Low) by a length finishing six furlongs in Imin 17 2-ssec, the last four in 52sec. Prince Filou shaped as if he is on the verge of winning form. Rustic (L. J. Ellis), Mhor (A. J.

Stokes), and Solaris <B. S. Dodds> sprinted six furlongs in Imin 18 3- the last four in 53 l-ssec. They were abreast at the finish. So Cold (B. S. Finlayson) showed ability to run half a mile in 50 4-ssec. It was a very good solo trial by this two-year-old. She is in the Haldon Stakes on Friday. Montreux (E. G. Low) started at the five furlongs, and ran the last four in 52 3-ssec. . Masai <R. J. Blair) and Border Reiver <G. W. Mein) were given two runs over the three brush fences on the trial steeples course. They worked up to a strong pace the second time around, and finished competent displays at the double. Masai has a record of a win and a third in two starts over country. Bosky (R. L. Browning) had a short lead from his stablemate Saltash (J. L. Coulter) finishing a run over eight fences. Saltash did not go at all badly for a little-experienced jumper. Jem Mace (J. L. Coulter) jumped four hurdles safely, but not at a very lively, pace. Kaseno (N. Eastwood) and Befana (H. T, Anderton) recorded Imin 50 2-ssec for their mile. They quickened to run the last half in 54sec. Kaseno appeared to do his work well. Skyrider (J. Leach) led Tintagel (R. W. Gould) by a neck, finishing seven furlongs in Imin 34 l-ssec. They went fairly briskly early, but took 55 2-ssec for the last half-mile. Purser (G. W Mein) and Fair Gatch <P. J. Kempton) recorded Imin 32 4-5 sec for seven furlongs and 52 4- for the last half-mile. Magic Circle (A. J. Stokes) and Kastanea (B. S. Finlayson) were on terms after, running seven furlongs in Imin 32 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 53sec. Magic Circle is in good trim to start a fresh campaign. He showed ability to win against the hack stayers at Riccarton in the autumn. Pleasant Ways <W. H. Beck) sprinted half a mile in 51 4-ssec, a time equalled soon aftei by Rayspar (A. H. Eastwood). Waterfall (N. Eastwood) and Captain Hunt (B. S. Dodds) showed good speed over five furlongs. They dashed over the final four in 49 4-ssec. Waterfall went keenly, and is all the better for her race at Washdyke last Saturday. Under Good Hold Ruve (N. Eastwood) was hard held while finishing half a mile alongside Copenhagen (A. J. Stokes) in 53 4-ssec. Ruve is fit for a fresh start in the Brabazon Handicap on Friday. Cheroot (B. S. Finlayson) led Volterra (W. A. Gibbs) by two lengths, finishing half a mile in 53 4-ssec. Roman Maid (N. Eastwood) was shading Surrend (Miss F. Kerr) and was a little over a length ahead of Studio (A. H. Eastwood* after running half a mile in 52sec. Studio dropped two lengths behind soon after the start, but ran up on terms in the straight. He went back again only in the last few strides. Roman Maid should develop form of a good standard on her forthcoming campaign. She looked good in her autumn two-year-old racing. Roa (E. G. Low) led Nugget (R. L. Browning) over half a mile in 53 4-ssec. Roa held a lead of two lengths from start to finish. The Splicer (C. T. Wilson) and Gladwyn (P. Graham) followed over half a mile in 51 3-ssec, and Fair Chase (G. W. Mein) and Forsyte (N. East wood) recorded 54 2-ssec. .»
